Surveying the sky in the optical bands
Naples University Federico II, Physics Department

Özet: The revolution in the technology of telescopes, detectors, and data processing, mining and archiving, has given a dramatic boost to a classical astronomical practice, that of surveying the night sky as a preexisting, wide, deep, and time-variable laboratory. The talk reviews the evolution of the concept of astronomical surveys, the status of the current main ground-based optical and near-IR projects, with particular emphasis to the VLT Survey Telescope (VST), and their scientific legacy to the next-decade major programs.
